Workshop Title: Strabismus Surgical Wet Lab: Mastering Extraocular Muscle Procedures

Description: This intensive workshop offers surgeons an unparalleled opportunity to refine their surgical skills in strabismus correction. Through extensive hands-on practice with animal models, participants will gain confidence and proficiency in fundamental extraocular muscle procedures in a controlled, supportive environment. 

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Accurately identify key anatomical landmarks of the extraocular muscles.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in core strabismus surgical techniques (e.g., recession, resection).

  • Master various suturing patterns and knot-tying specific to strabismus surgery.

Target Audience:  Practicing Ophthalmologists seeking to enhance or refresh their surgical skills, Fellows in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and Ophthalmology Residents (PGY-3 and above).

Instructor: Hal Schwartzstein, DO, is a fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist employed as an assistant professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics at Northwell Health and Zucker School of Medicine in New York. He is resident course director for the pediatric ophthalmology section of the Basic and Clinical Science Course for Northwell ophthalmology residents.

Station Setup: Two participants will share a fully equipped wet lab station, complete with surgical loupes, microsurgical instruments, suture materials, and dedicated specimens.
